I pulled into the layby at Nunnykirk for no better reason than I needed five minutes off the road. Nothing dramatic — just one of those stretches of Northumberland where the hedges are too high to see much and you start to feel like you’re driving through a green corridor rather than a county.
Then I got out, looked across the field, and there it was: that exact view. The one burned into the memory of anyone who used a computer in the early 2000s. Rolling green hill, that one impossibly blue sky, the cloud doing its best impression of Microsoft’s most famous wallpaper. Bliss, except real, and with a wooden fence and a tangle of cow parsley in the way instead of a 4:3 monitor bezel.
I don’t think the photographer who took the original Bliss photo was searching for anything special either — by all accounts it was just a hillside in Sonoma County he happened to drive past. Maybe that’s the trick. You don’t go looking for the iconic view. You stop for a break in a layby near Nunnykirk and it’s just sitting there waiting for you.
